“I am a printmaker. I draw, carve and print. I love the laboriousness of printmaking, the sculptural feel of the final blocks. I love the reproducible nature of the craft - being able to make multiples means many more people can afford and appreciate my work.
I am following a long line of printmaking history as part of popular culture. Printmaking has a long history of being used for communication, often political - to disseminate information through posters, flyers, handouts, etc. It’s inexpensive and effective.
My latest works, carved on linoleum and rubber, are of hybrids: human bodies in haute couture or athletic wear sporting the heads of local creatures. My printed friends are often accompanied by text, scraps of poems, songs, quotations, and memes from social media. Because I primarily print in black and white I usually embellish the images with watercolor, marker, colored pencil, googly eyes, or glitter. Glitter adds just the right element of popular culture community I am hoping to engage in my work.
I seek connection with the viewer through humor - glitter, text, John Fluevog shoes and party hats on ravens and black bears. I believe humor can unite us. I find connection with community, as well, by showing my work in local restaurants and coffeehouses because that is where a diverse group of locals and tourists gather here in the Eastern Sierra where I live.”
